Embracing the Beginner's Mind in Yoga at Yoga Bhaya

At Yoga Bhaya, we welcome yogis of all levels, from seasoned practitioners to those stepping onto the mat for the very first time. We believe that no matter your experience, cultivating a “beginner’s mind” can profoundly enrich your practice and enhance your overall well-being.

What is the Beginner’s Mind?

The beginner’s mind, also known as Shoshin in Zen Buddhism, is about approaching life—and yoga—with openness, eagerness, and a lack of preconceptions. It’s about shedding the weight of expectations and judgments and seeing each moment as an opportunity for discovery. It’s about being curious, not critical, and being willing to learn something new in every class, regardless of how many times you’ve practised.

Focus on the Present

One of the most beautiful aspects of yoga is its ability to anchor us in the present moment. When you approach each pose with a beginner’s mind, you’re better able to focus on the sensations in your body, the rhythm of your breath, and the subtle nuances of the practice. You’re less likely to be distracted by thoughts of the past or worries about the future, and more able to fully immerse yourself in the here and now. This practice encourages you to be fully present and in tune with your feelings and sensations.

Self-Compassion and Non-Judgment

Embracing the beginner’s mind also means cultivating self-compassion and non-judgment. It’s about acknowledging that it’s okay to wobble, to fall, to not get it “right” every time. Yoga isn’t about achieving perfection; it’s about learning to accept and appreciate yourself, just as you are, in this very moment. It’s a reminder that we are all students of life and should have compassion, and be non-judgmental towards ourselves, and others.

Cultivating the Beginner’s Mind at Yoga Bhaya

At Yoga Bhaya, we encourage you to bring a beginner’s mind to every class. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or a complete novice, we invite you to let go of expectations, embrace the unknown, and approach your practice with curiosity and joy. You may be surprised by what you discover! By releasing judgment and approaching each practice with openness, one can find profound growth and joy.
